About AqWa
Aquaculture Wales (AqWa) is dedicated to developing and transferring sustainable aquaculture approaches for Wales and internationally, through innovative R&D, advocacy, education and training. Instigated in 2003 with support from the European Union, the Welsh Assembly Government and Swansea University, AqWa operations now form part of the multi-institutional Welsh Institute for Sustainable Environments (WISE). Related activities include Professional Practice for Sustainable Development (PP4SD, https://www.pp4sd.org.uk/). The team’s research activities are coordinated from the Centre for Sustainable Aquaculture Research (CSAR), located at Swansea University.
Facilities and Systems
The Centre for Sustainable Aquaculture Research (CSAR) is a state-of-the-art facility designed for feed development and health management studies on finfish and shellfish. It incorporates modern recirculating aquaculture technology to provide fully programmable environmental conditions for research on a range of species, from temperate to tropical and marine to freshwater.
Research
The facilities at CSAR are available now for contract and collaborative research. The current principle areas of research include aquaculture water quality control and effluent management, nutritional requirements and feed evaluation for farmed aquatic animals, and fish and crustacean immunology, and incorporate both commercial and academic research.
Education and Training
The scope of our work encompasses advocacy, policy development, innovative initial training and professional development, in addition to technological R&D. A portfolio of training programmes is being developed to support the industry, agencies and individuals in developing and applying innovations and sustainable practices in their own workplace. An MSc course on Aquaculture and the Environment is currently offered at the Swansea University, and is in its second year.
